DES MOINES, Iowa - Alysia Montano won her semifinal heat in the women's 800 meters and incoming Cal freshman Khalfani Muhammad took second in the junior men's 200 meters to highlight Golden Bear action at the USA Track & Field Championships Friday.

Montano, a former NCAA champion at Cal, will be aiming for her fourth consecutive and fifth overall national title in the 800 meters. The 2012 Olympian was timed in 2:00.14 in her heat, well ahead of Ajee' Wilson, who finished in 2:00.91. Brenda Martinez, running in heat 2, posted the fastest overall time of the day in 1:59.84. The 800-meter final will start at 1:04 p.m. PT Sunday and be televised on NBC.

Muhammad, a running back out of Sherman Oaks who will be a freshman on the Cal football team, ran 21.14 into a wind of 3.0 meters per second in his qualifying heat in the early afternoon. With the winds turned around in the final, he finished in 20.97w (+4.0 mps), just behind winner Just'N Thymes, who crossed the line in 20.61. Muhammad, the state high school champion at both 100 and 200 meters, placed fifth in the junior 100 Thursday.

Noel Frazier, who just completed his freshman year in track & field for the Bears, did not clear a height in the high jump at the junior meet. He passed on the opening height of 6-8.25, then missed all three of his attempts at 6-10.25.
