5 Golden Bears Earn Berths on U.S. Pan Pacs Team

IRVINE – The 2014 Phillips 66 National Championships concluded on Sunday, and at the end of the meet, Golden Bears were rewarded with five spots of the U.S. team at the will compete at the Pac Pacific Championships later this month.

Those making the trip to Australia for the competition that will run from Aug. 21-24 are junior Rachel Bootsma, sophomore Missy Franklin, alumna Caitlin Leverenz, junior Elizabeth Pelton and incoming freshman Cierra Runge. Cal coach Teri McKeever will serve as the head coach of the women’s team for the trip.

Franklin was named the women’s high-point award winner. She captured three events – the 100- and 200-meter backstroke and the 100-meter freestyle – and was runner-up in the 200 free.

On Sunday, several Bears earned places in the evening finals. Leverenz started off with a third-place finish in the 200-meter individual medley in 2:11.05, while sophomore Celina Li was sixth in 2:12.86 and junior Kelly Naze took seventh in the B final in 2:16.18.

Cal grad and three-time Olympian Natalie Coughlin was sixth in the 50 free in 24.97, and senior Kaylin Bing placed seventh in the B final in 25.72.

Overall, Golden Bears captured four events during the U.S. championships. In addition to Franklin’s three titles, Bootsma won the 50 back. Runge was runner-up in both the 400 and 800 free, with Pelton third in the 100 back.
