12 Golden Bears Earn Scholar All-American Honors

Women's swimming & diving also chosen for team award with cumulative 3.27 GPA.

BERKELEY – Twelve members of the Cal women’s swimming & diving team, all with grade-point averages of 3.5 or higher, have been named Scholar All-Americans by the College Swimming Coaches Association of American.

Among the group, 10 were selected to the first team – the highest total in the Pac-12 and second-highest in the country – with two more earning honorable mention recognition.

To qualify for the team, swimmers and divers must achieve a cumulative or term GPA of 3.5 or higher. Those on the first team qualified for and competed in the NCAA Championships, while those who swam a B qualifying standard or reached the zone diving meet received honorable mention

The Bears who earned honorable mention are Melissa Bates and Kristen Vredeveld.

Tran, a senior for Cal in 2013-14, was chosen to the first team for the third year in a row, while Acker, Cheng and Naze are repeaters from last season and Piehl claimed the honor for the second time after being a 2012 selection.

Last week, the entire Cal squad was honored with Scholar All-American team status with an overall GPA of 3.27.
