Franklin, Pelton Finish 1-2 in 100 Back
INDIANAPOLIS – California’s Missy Franklin and Elizabeth Pelton finished 1-2 in a backstroke event for the second time – tonight in the 100-meter race – and Rachel Bootsma gave the Golden Bears three of the top four finishers in the 100 backstroke on Friday at the U.S. National Championships and World Championship Trials at the Indiana University Natatorium.
Franklin – who has now won four events in Indianapolis – clocked a U.S. Open and meet-record time of 58.67 to beat Pelton, who had a time of 59.27. Bootsma posted a time of 59.90.
Two days ago, Franklin, the incoming Bear, and Pelton, a sophomore in the fall, placed 1-2 in the 200 back.
Three Cal men swam in the A finals on Friday. Incoming freshman Ryan Murphy took third place in the 100 back with a time of 53.38, while Jacob Pebley – a sophomore in the fall – finished sixth with a time of 53.98. In the 100 breaststroke, Josh Prenot – another rising sophomore – placed eighth with a time of 1:01.81.
The meet, which serves as qualification for the upcoming World Championships, ends on Saturday, June 29. The World Championships run from July 28-Aug. 4 in Barcelona.
