BERKELEY – Longtime Bay Area rivals Cal and Stanford are back to do battle on the pitch Saturday, but this time it’s not the score that matters. The Golden Bears and the Cardinal are teaming up for the third annual Team Breezy Collegiate Cup, an exhibition soccer match and charity event that benefits Team Breezy and Special Spaces of the San Francisco Bay Area.
"We are honored to be supporting this event for Breezy and her family's foundation. When we found out about Breezy a few years ago and what she had gone through it was no question we would do something to show our support," said Cal women's soccer junior Grace Leer. "Every year it is amazing to see friends and family come out to watch us play against Stanford, and nothing is better than to show our love for someone who loves the game of soccer the way Stanford and Cal women's soccer do."
"Breezy has inspired us to all to look beyond what is not in our control and focus on the positives," added Cal head coach Neil McGuire. "She and her family are special to our Cal program and we are happy to again join with Stanford to honor her foundation."
The soccer match includes a pre-game opening ceremony and autographs and photos with the players before and after the game. Before the match, there will be carnival festivities with a bounce house, giant slide, food and games.
Team Breezy will also host a juggle-a-thon, where participants can help raise money for Special Spaces by securing pledges based on how many times they can juggle a soccer ball non-stop. Registration for the competitions is $25 and includes a Team Breezy T-shirt, all-access pass to the game and carnival activities, and a skills and drills coaching and leadership talk with top collegiate athletes. Prizes will be awarded for the top jugglers and pledge contributors.
The soccer match begins at 5 p.m., and the carnival and juggle-a-thon begin at 2 p.m. All activities will be held at Dougherty Valley High School in San Ramon, Calif. Entry to the carnival area is $10, and donations to the soccer game are also $10.
Proceeds from the event will benefit Special Spaces, an organization that creates dream bedrooms for children with life-threatening medical illnesses. Special Spaces is the partnership of choice of Team Breezy, who the Bears have partnered with for three years in honor of Brianne “Breezy” Bochenek. Breezy is a lifelong Cal fan who was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer, when she was nine. Though her leg was amputated, Breezy has dedicated her life to meeting life’s challenges head on and showing others that her illness does not limit her.
"We are so proud of her recovery and her progress and we cannot wait to come out this Saturday and support Team Breezy," Leer said.
