CAL BEAR BLOG: BEARS ENTER POSTSEASON WITH MOMENTUM

BERKELEY -- Cal begins its tenth consecutive postseason run against familiar foe Santa Clara on Saturday at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara. The Broncos enter the NCAA tournament ranked ninth in the NSCAA Coaches Poll, and a fourth seed in the 64-team field.

Tickets for the game are $10 for adults and $7 for youth, students and seniors, and can be purchased at the gate or online at: http://bit.ly/1fFsB4B.

Live stats will be available on SantaClaraBroncos.com, and in-game tweets and scoring updates will be provided on Twitter via @CalWomensSoccer.

The Bay Area rivals have already met once this season, settling for a 1-1 draw in double overtime in Bronco territory. Rachel Mercik scored the goal for the Golden Bears and Sarah Jackson scored for the Broncos. Cal goalie Emily Kruger also tallied a career-high 11 saves.

The two teams last met in the postseason in 2011, where they tied 1-1 in double overtime, forcing the game into a penalty kick shootout. Cal won 4-3 with the game-winning goal from then-senior Danielle Brunache and game-winning save from then-redshirt freshman Kat Messinger. Cal fell to Boston College in the second round, 3-1 in penalty kicks.

The Golden Bears have an all-time postseason record of 14-19-13 and have advanced to at least the second round of the tournament seven of the last 10 seasons, and every year except 2008 since Neil McGuire became head coach in 2007. In 2012, Cal advanced out of the first round after beating Pepperdine 1-0 in Malibu, but fell in the second round 2-1 against San Diego State in San Diego.

TEAM NOTES
Before UCLA’s 1-0 victory snapped the streak, Cal’s 13-game unbeaten streak was the team’s best since 1993 and only the fourth time in program history that the team has gone unbeaten through 13 or more games. Cal’s other unbeaten streaks came in 1986 (14), 1987 (16), and 1993 (13).

Cal has only allowed two goals in the first half (UCLA, Washington State) of a match in 2013, and is 0-2 when allowing a goal in the first half.

Cal finished fifth in the Pac-12 with a 4-4-3 conference record. The Bears were originally projected to finish third.
