FORT WORTH, Texas – Sophomore quarterback Jared Goff was named Wednesday to the watch list for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award. Goff is one of 39 quarterbacks and seven sophomores on the list. The award is presented annually to the nation's best college quarterback and honors candidates who exemplify Davey O'Brien's enduring character while exhibiting teamwork, sportsmanship and leadership in both academics and athletics.
Goff broke single-season Cal records for passing yards (3,508), most yardage gained (3,508), total offense (3,446), passes completed (320) and passes attempted (531) when he was one of four Golden Bears to start all 12 games in 2013 and also became the first true freshman quarterback in school history to start a season opener. He also threw 18 touchdown passes to tie for 10th on Cal’s all-time single-season list. In addition, Goff broke a single-game school record with 504 passing yards against Washington State and became the second quarterback in Pac-12 history to throw for 450 yards or more in a game three times, adding 450 in his collegiate debut against Northwestern and 485 the following contest against Portland State. He also threw for over 300 yards against both Ohio State (371) and Washington (336) to give him five 300-yard passing games, equaling Cal’s single-season record and tying for fourth on the school’s all-time list.
The watch list for the Davey O’Brien Quarterback Award® was compiled by a subset of the Davey O’Brien National Selection Committee and is based on player performance during the previous year and expectations heading into the 2014 college football season. Appearing on the watch list is not a requirement for a player to win the Davey O'Brien Award. Quarterbacks from all 125 NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) schools are eligible for the award until the field is narrowed to 16 semifinalists Monday, Nov. 3. The Foundation and the Selection Committee will announce three finalists Monday, Nov. 24. The winner will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards televised by ESPN Thursday, Dec. 11 (7-9 p.m.).
