TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Junior wide receiver Chris Harper was named Wednesday to the preseason watch list for the 2014 Biletnikoff Award announced by the Tallahassee Quarterback Club (TQC) Foundation, Inc. Harper is on the preseason watch list for the second straight season for the honor annually recognizes the outstanding receiver in college football and named for Fred Biletnikoff, a member of the pro and college football halls of fame who was an All-Pro receiver with the Oakland Raiders after an All-American collegiate career at Florida State.

The honor is the latest for Harper prior to the upcoming 2014 campaign. He was named earlier to the watch list for the CFPA Wide Receivers Trophy and was also a third-team preseason All-Pac-12 selection of Athlon and Phil Steele.

Harper has been Cal’s most productive receiver over the last two seasons and is the team’s active career leader in receptions (111), receiving yards (1,396), receiving touchdowns (7), total touchdowns (8) and points (48), while ranking second in all-purpose yards (1,429) over 23 games played and 14 starts. Harper was on the Biletnikoff Award Watch List for the entire season as a 2013 sophomore when he led Cal in receiving yards (852) and tied for the team lead in touchdown catches (5) while also being second on the club in receptions (70) and tied for second in scoring (30), with all of the numbers career highs. His receptions also ranked seventh on Cal’s all-time single-season list.

Harper is one of 55 players on the 2014 Biletnikoff Award Watch List with any player who catches a pass eligible for the award rather than only wide receivers. Receivers may be added to the watch list as their season performance dictates. The award recipient is selected by the highly distinguished Biletnikoff Award National Selection Committee, a group of 221 prominent college football journalists, commentators and former receivers.

Ten semifinalists (November 17) and three finalists (November 24) will be announced before the winner is presented by Biletnikoff on The Home Depot College Football Awards Show to be telecast by ESPN from 7 – 9 p.m. on December 11. The winner will receive his trophy at the Biletnikoff Awards Banquet at the University Center Club at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee on February 7, 2015. The banquet will be streamed live by ESPN3.

Harper and the Golden Bears open the 2014 season at Northwestern on Aug. 30 (Noon PT, Pac-12 Networks) before hosting the first of six home games at Kabam Field at California Memorial Stadium against Sacramento State on Sept. 6.

The Golden Bears will also play Pac-12 opponents Colorado (Sept. 27), Washington (Oct. 11), UCLA (Oct. 18) and Stanford (Nov. 22) in Berkeley before concluding the 2014 regular season by hosting a non-conference game against BYU on Nov. 29.

In addition, Cal will play a home contest against Oregon in the first-ever collegiate football game at Levi’s® Stadium on Friday, Oct. 24. The game will be televised by FOX Sports 1 with kickoff slated for 7 p.m. PT.

Cal has road Pac-12 contests at Arizona (Sept. 20), Washington State (Oct. 4), Oregon State (Nov. 1) and USC (Nov. 13), with the regular season’s final road game against the Trojans a Thursday night ESPN game with kickoff at 6 p.m. PT.
