Garner played in three games off the bench in his second year with the program as a redshirt freshman in 2014 after redshirted in his first campaign at Cal as a true freshman in 2013. His father, Dwight Garner, was a four-year letterwinner at Cal from 1982-85 and made one of the five laterals during “The Play” as a freshman, while also leading the team in punt returns as a sophomore, receiving as a junior, and kick returns both as a sophomore and junior.
