LYNCHBURG, Va. – Four Bears scored as California ended the 2013 season on a high note with a 5-1 victory over Radford in the NorPac Tournament consolation bracket.

One day after a tight 3-1 loss to top-seeded Liberty, the Bears (7-12) responded with three goals in the opening 25 minutes against Radford (5-16) Friday and never looked back en route to the 5-1 victory.

“It’s difficult because they have to deal with disappointment of being in a consolation game,” California head coach Shellie Onstead said. “This is only our second experience ever being in the consolation bracket in NorPac, but it’s a nice way to end the season with the win and send the seniors out on an up note. To play well today takes some of the sting out.”

Cal opened the scoring just 1:53 into the game with a credited own goal after Monica Marazzo’s shot was deflected by a Radford back into the cage. Freshman Nicole Henrikkson made it 2-0 Cal in the 21st minute with her first career goal off an assist from Nicole Wallstedt.

The Highlanders cut the deficit at 23:07 when Stacey Mackintosh converted a penalty stroke, but the Bears added one more before the half another freshman – Sydney Earle – scored unassisted at 25:10.

Earle’s older sister, Andrea, scored the fourth goal shortly after the start of the second half with her fifth goal of the season at 38:50. Senior Shannon Elmitt rounded out the effort at 66:10 with her first of the season off an assist from Clara Goni.

“We set certain goals for the game,” Onstead said. “I didn’t want them to treat it any differently. It was nice to have Shannon get a goal at the end. They finished all the way through and finished strong. They respected their opponent to play through and that was a good result.”
