BERKELEY – For the third time this season, California a ranked opponent to overtime, but No. 11 Stanford was able to hit in the game-winning goal in the 74th minute to win the regular season finale at Maxwell Family Field.
The Golden Bears led the game with four penalty corner opportunities – all coming in the first half – but it was Stanford’s Shannon Herold who hit in the golden goal after a Cardinal penalty corner in overtime. The Bears (6-11, 2-4 NorPac) and Cardinal (14-4, 5-1 NorPac) will both next take action at the NorPac Tournament next weekend with opponents still to be determined.
In a season filled with injuries, Cal has taken on six ranked teams and played half of those to overtime. An opening weekend game against No. 4 Connecticut yielded a close 2-1 game in regulation before the Bears played No. 12 Northwestern to overtime in Chicago. Then-No. 8 Stanford took a regulation win in Palo Alto before Cal played No. 7 Duke to a 2-1 double-overtime game in Durham. Following the every-other pattern, the Bears played a regulation game at No. 3 North Carolina before Thursday night’s overtime game against No. 11 Stanford.
Stanford’s Shannon Herold scored the winning goal at 73:28 with the assist from Kelsey Harbin. California junior goalkeeper Courtney Hendrickson registered six saves in the match.
