SAN JOSE, Calif. - Former California Golden Bear defender Steve Birnbaum, now a member of Major League Soccer's D.C. United, returned to the Bay Area last Friday for the first time since he was selected as the second overall pick in the MLS SuperDraft this past January. D.C. United defeated the San Jose Earthquakes 2-1 at Buck Shaw Stadium and caught up with Birnbaum after he played a solid 90 minutes in the win to reflect on his time at Cal, and catch Bears fans up on how his rookie season has been going. Birnbaum has been in manager Ben Olsen's starting XI for five straight matches for the Eastern Conference leaders.
