BERKELEY – California Golden Bears head coach Kevin Grimes announced today that the program has signed Southern California forward Paul Salcedo to a National Letter of Intent for the 2014 class, bringing the total number of players to eight. The Bears are coming off of a record-setting season that saw them ranked number one in the country for a six-week period for the first time in school history. They advanced to the school’s third ever quarterfinal appearance and earned the NCAA tournament’s fourth overall seed, the highest ever for the program.

“Paul Salcedo is an excellent addition to the 2014 recruiting class,” Grimes said. “We are looking forward to this group of players adding great quality to our program.”

Salcedo, an Inglewood native, is a four-star player according to TopDrawerSoccer.com who most recently captained the Chivas USA U18 Academy team, leading the club in goals with nine, in 13 appearances. He previously captained the Strikers FC U17/18 Academy side during the 2012-13 season, alongside fellow Cal commit, defender Matt Locklear and current Bears midfielder Christian Thierjung and forward Matt Chasman. Salcedo scored 19 goals that season in 30 appearances, just two shy of Thierjung’s 21 for the Strikers. As a freshman at Hawthorne high school, Salcedo led the varsity team in goals with seven for the Cougars.

Salcedo joins seven other new Bears: Marko Helfrich (midfielder), Locklear (defender), Jorge Miranda (defender), Joshua Morton (defender), Ugo Rebecchini (defender), Aravind Sivakumar (midfielder) and Eloi Vasquez (midfielder/forward). Seven of the eight members of the 2014 class are California natives, with four hailing from northern California, three coming from the southern portion of the state and one making the transition to Berkeley from Rome, Italy.
