NAPA, Calif. – California opened the inaugural Silverado Showdown with a first-round 308 before the team rebounded with a 299 in the second round to finish 13th after 36 holes at the Silverado Resort North Course in Napa.

The tournament, co-hosted by Colorado and Oregon and featuring a bevy of the top teams in collegiate golf, is being held at the site of the upcoming PGA Tour Frys.com Open Cup, and the difficult course was able to stall the Golden Bears after Monday’s action.

“Today was a disappointment,” California head coach Nancy McDaniel said. “(Our team) not being prepared for the get-go really showed. Our execution was off. That begins with having a really good plan and sticking to it. The plan just wasn’t there somewhere. Tomorrow we have to come out there, stick to our plan and the execution will come. This is a much better team than what we saw out there.”

Sophomore Hannah Suh leads the Bears with a 150 (+6) with senior Nicola Rössler (151, +7) and junior Jo Ee Kok (152, +8) right behind.

Washington is the team leader with a 289-292=581 (+5) with top-ranked USC second with a 582 (+6). The Bears sit 13th with a 308-299=607 (+31) heading into the final round.

“It’s a great venue being only an hour and a half away from home and being a quality golf course,” McDaniel said. “Having an opportunity to play between ASU (last week) and Pac-12’s is awesome. If you come here and don’t play so well, we can still take away a lot of great things going into postseason. I can’t ask for a better week, but I can ask for better play.”

After the first 18 holes, the Bears stood with a 308 courtesy of a 74 from Rössler who stood at 1-under through 16 holes before carding a double-bogey on the par-4 3rd and a bogey on the par-4 4th to finish the round at 2-over. Rössler hit birdies on the 6th, 8th, 11th and 13th in the opening round. She fell back to 37th individually with a 77 in the second round (74-77=151, +7).

Suh, who had a first-round 79, responded strongly in the second time through the course with a 1-under 71after hitting five birdies in the round. Suh was one of only 15 individuals to shoot a round under par Monday. The sophomore sits 33rd on the individual leaderboard with a 79-71=150 (+6).

Kok hit identical 76’s and sits 41st individually while sophomore Carly Childs bounced back from an opening round 83 to shoot 75 in the second round for a 36-hoel score of 83-75=158 (+14).

Sophomore Pauline Loulier finished both rounds with a 79-80=159 (+15) in what is her first career tournament as a member of Cal’s lineup.

Competition concludes Tuesday with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. in a shotgun start.
