KONA, Hawaii – In a highly talented field full of nationally-ranked Pac-12 teams, the California women’s golf team finished eighth as a team at the Pac-12 Preview held at the Nanea Golf Club. The Bears shot a 902 (292-298-312, +26) at the par-73 tournament, which was the fall finale for Cal.

Senior Nicola Rössler posted her third top-20 finish in four tournaments after placing 18th on the individual leaderboard at 72-74-74=220 (+1). Sophomore Carly Childs finished 28th, freshman Lucia Gutierrez was 32nd and sophomores Hannah Suh and Morgan Thompson were 42nd and 52nd, respectively, for the Bears.

“Today wasn’t our best day,” McDaniel said. ‘We had solid play from Nico and there was just too big of a fall to make a move up to the 4-5-6 range. The course was setup a lot differently today, and we have to learn to navigate a little better. It was windy early as well, which was different for us, and we’ll need to learn how to play in the wind better in the future.”

Rössler had another solid round for the Bears at 1-over on the day. A bogey began the day on the 8th, but she followed it up with a par-4 birdie on the 9th to immediately hit back even. A bogey on the 15th was also immediately followed by a par-4 birdie on the 16th, and Rössler took that strong play into the end of the day before bogeying the final hole to shoot a 74 on the 6,463-yard course.

Two double-bogeys thwarted what was an overall positive tournament for Childs, who carded 71-74-80=225 (+6) to place 28th individually, nearly making her third top-20 finish of the fall before double-bogeying her penultimate hole, the par-4 5th.

“Its really important to have someone step out,” McDaniel said of Rössler. “She’s certainly done that along with Carly. Carly Childs has had a solid fall. With their leadership and work ethic in the offseason, we can come back in the spring a stronger team.”

Freshman Lucia Gutierrez and sophomore Hannah Suh both carded 79’s Tuesday, and Thompson carded an 80. Gutierrez finished 32nd individually at 74-73-79=226 (+7), Suh finished 42nd at 75-77-79=231 (+12) and Thompson finished 52nd at 77-81-80=238 (+19).

“It was nice to end the fall in Hawaii,” McDaniel said. “It was exactly what we needed to come back in the spring and really work hard over the offseason solid in our conference.”

Cal’s spring season begins February 15-16 with the Peg Barnard Invitational in Stanford, Calif.
