SAMMAMISH, Wash. – California sophomore Carly Childs posted her second straight top 10 finish to start the year to help push the Golden Bears to a fifth-place team finish at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational held at the Sahalee Country Club.

Cal shot a 301-299-306=906 (+42) at the two-day, 54-hole tournament with top 25 finishes from Childs and senior Nicola Rössler. Childs, who opened the year with a fourth-place finish at the Ptarmigan Classic, placed seventh with a 7-over, 223 (76-75-72).

Childs began the final round with a bogey and sat at two-over through nine holes, but a back nine consisting of two birdies and seven pars put her at an even 72 on the day. The round was her third of six this season at or below par.

“Carly was really solid,” California head coach Nancy McDaniel said. “She just came back this year with a lot of hard work put in. You can tell she’s prepared is playing really solid right now.”

Rössler rebounded from her second round with a 73 Tuesday to finish 22nd overall at 74-79-73=226 (+10). Freshman Lucia Gutierrez, in her first collegiate tournament, followed behind at 11-over (78-70-79=227) thanks to a strong under-par second round of 70, the second-lowest round of the season thus far for the Golden Bears.

“We had a solid three rounds from Carly, and today was encouraging to see Nico come back (from her second round),” McDaniel said. “Our freshman, Lucia, had an under par round and was solid to stay in the 70’s in all three rounds, especially in the second round with the weather we had to deal with.”

Hannah Suh shot a 17-over 233 (72-77-82) and Jo Ee Kok shot a 238 in her first tournament as a member of Cal’s official lineup.

The Bears next compete at the Stanford Intercollegiate from October 25-27.

“We’ll regroup and get ready for a good field at Stanford in a few weeks,” McDaniel said to close out the tournament.
