BERKELEY - Former California Golden Bear women's golf team member Emily Childs (2009-12) won the CN Canadian Women's Tour - Ontario tournament Wednesday at the Ambassador Golf Club in Windsor, Ontario with a two-round score of 69-65=134.
The 36-hole tournament is the third of four tournaments on the 2013 CN Canadian Women's Tour schedule and moved Childs to fourth on the Canadian Order of Merit list as the top-ranking American after three events on the CN Canadian Women's Tour.
Childs won the tournament after defeating Jessica Shepley in a three-hole playoff after both finished with eight-under 134's in Ontario. Childs shot a two-under first round before shooting a six-under 65 in Wednesday's second round with six birdies and no bogeys on the day.
Childs continues to prepare to compete at the 2013 U.S. Women's Open which will take place June 24-30 at the Sebonack Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y. The Alameda native qualified for her first U.S. Women's Open after winning the Northern California Golfing Association Sectional at the Lake Merced Golf and Country Club last month.
Childs is the third Golden Bear to qualify for the U.S. Women's Open in the past four years. Current assistant coach Sofie Aagaard (Andersson) qualified for the tournament in 2010 at the Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Penn., and Sophia Sheridan played in the 2009 tournament at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Penn.
