Cal Set For Virginia/Stanford Invitationals

Select group of Bears will compete in Panorama Farms Invitational against several nationally-ranked squads

BERKELEY – The California men’s and women’s cross country teams will be represented in two invitationals Saturday morning, with a select group of Golden Bears competing at the Panorama Farms/Virginia Invitational in Earlysville, Va. and the rest of the squad participating in the nearby Stanford Invitational.

The Panorama Farms/Virginia Invitational features a pair of nationally-ranked teams on the men’s side, including No. 11 Eastern Kentucky and No. 16 Virginia. Both races feature 11 regionally-ranked squads. The Bears are ranked No. 8 in the West Region on the men’s side and No. 13 in the West Region on the women’s side.

Joining Cal in the men’s race is No. 11 Eastern Kentucky, No. 16 Virginia, North Carolina, Duke, Liberty, Virginia Tech, High Point, William & Mary, George Mason, Auburn, Mississippi and UNC Greensboro.

The Bears will be joined by No. 14 William & Mary, Virginia, North Carolina, Eastern Kentucky, UNC Greensboro, Virginia Tech. Auburn, George Mason, High Point, Liberty, Mississippi and Navy in the women’s race.

Senior J.P. Slater, juniors Chris Walden and Jordan Locklear, sophomores Leland Later and Thomas Joyce, and freshmen Ned Trim and Seamus Land will represent the Bears in Virginia in the 8,000-meter men’s race set to begin at 7 a.m. (PT). Juniors Kelsey Santisteban, Heather Cerney, Sydney Gray and Laura O’Neill, and sophomores Xochitl Navarrete, Mariel Mendoza and Julia Lipson will represent the women in the 5,000-meter race set to begin at 7:30 a.m. (PT).

Last season at the Panorama Invitational, the women placed fourth overall as a team, led by Santisteban’s third-place individual finish, and the men placed sixth overall as a team.  

The rest of the squad will compete in the 40th annual Stanford Invitational on Saturday held on the Stanford Golf Course. The men’s 8,000-meter race will begin at 9:50 a.m. and the women’s 6,000-meter race will begin at 10:30 a.m. There will be a total of 33 collegiate teams represented in the Stanford Invitational.    

The Bears have competed in one meet so far this fall with both the men and women placing second at the USF Invitational on Aug. 31. Santisteban captured the women’s individual title with Walden placing second individually for the men in the season-opening competition.

Following Saturday’s competition, Cal will compete in the Sacramento Jamboree in Sacramento, Calif. on Friday, Oct. 4 at 9:30 a.m.
