BERKELEY – The California men’s and women’s cross country teams will head to Sacramento to compete in the NCAA West Regionals on Friday, Nov. 15, at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex. The men’s 10,000-meter race will begin at 10:30 a.m. (PT) and the women’s 6,000-meter race will get underway at 11:45 a.m. (PT).

The NCAA West Regionals feature competitors from 37 schools in Washington, Oregon, California and Nevada. The top two teams from each of the nine NCAA regionals this weekend will automatically advance to the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 23. The top four individuals from team's not advancing will qualify for nationals.
Last season, Kelsey Santisteban placed eighth in the NCAA West Regionals held in Seattle to qualify for the NCAA Championships. The women placed ninth overall as a team out of 30 schools in last season’s NCAA West Regionals. The men placed 13th overall as a team out of 30 schools in last season’s NCAA West Regionals meet.
Santistben and the Bears have experienced the course in Sacramento already this season, competing in the Sacramento State Inter-Regional Jamboree on Oct. 4. The Golden Bear captured the 6,000-meter individual title with a time of 16:23 in the event.
The Cal women enter the NCAA West Regionals ranked 13th in the region and the Cal men are ranked 15th. Six schools in the women’s race enter the weekend ranked in the top-25 nationally, including top-ranked Arizona, Washington (12), Oregon (15), San Francisco (17), Stanford (18) and Boise State (25). Five men’s teams enter the NCAA West Regionals nationally ranked, including Oregon (4), Stanford (6), Portland (10), Arizona State (28) and Washington (29).
Santisteban will be joined by fellow juniors Heather Cerney and Sydney Gray, sophomores Mariel Mendoza, Xochitl Navarrete and Ashlyn Dadkhah, and redshirt freshman Molly Babcock for the Golden Bears in Friday’s NCAA Regional race.
Navarette (21:13), Mendoza (21:24) and Dadkhah (21:35) each raced for the Bears in last season’s NCAA West Regionals in Seattle.
The Cal men’s lineup will feature redshirt senior J.P. Slater, redshirt junior Jordan Locklear, sophomores Thomas Joyce and Leland Later, redshirt freshmen Seamus Land and Ned Trim, and freshman Jeff Schaefer. Locklear (30:50) and Later (31:16) each raced for the Bears in last season’s NCAA West Regionals. Junior Chris Walden, who was Cal’s top performer in the 2012 NCAA Regionals, has been sidelined since the opening race of 2013.The Golden Bears placed ninth as a team in both the men’s and women’s race at the Pac-12 Championships in Louisville, Colo. on Nov. 2 in their previous team event. Santisteban finished third overall with a time of 21:18 to lead the Cal women, while Slater (28th, 25:58) and Later (29th, 25:59) finished within a second of each other to pace the men in the 8,000-meter race.
