LOS ANGELES - The Golden Bears have advanced to the national semifinals by beating UCLA, 41-0, Saturday on North Athletic Field in the Varsity Cup National Championships Super Regionals.

Moving into the next round on the strength of a staunch defense and seven tries led by captain Seamus Kelly's hat trick, Cal (17-2, 5-0 PAC) will host to a semifinal April 26 on Witter Rugby Field against Central Washington, which defeated Utah, 25-24, earlier in the day.

A methodical first 40 minutes gave Cal a four-try, 24-0 halftime lead with a Blue and Gold lineup featuring frosh-sophs including tighthead prop George Vrame, locks James Kondrat and Tomas Zerbino, flyhalf Russell Webb and wings Harry Adolphus and Miles Honens.

UCLA came out of the break with passion but the Bears managed to repel the Bruins' attack led by inside center Sam Sirrel, who made solid gains and knocked on the door before knocking the ball near the try line.

The Bruins had another comeback opportunity soon after when Cal scrumhalf Paul Bosco's yellow card was followed six minutes later by another yellow against Adolphus to leave the Bears short by two players for a four-minute span.

"We gave each other a look and though there wasn't much said, we all knew what had to be done," said Kelly. "I was happy with how we responded after that. We gritted our teeth and got it done."

Cal kept the ball out of is end and played through that adversity to score on Brad Harrington's second try before the team returned to full strength. A second try by Scott Walsh and Kelly's third put punctuation marks on the contest.

The Bruins end their 15s season at 14-3 overall (4-2 PAC), with all their losses this spring at the hands of the Rugby Bears.

A UCLA upset Saturday would have given Central Washington home pitch for the April 26 semis, but Wildcats head coach Tony Pacheco said CWU is happy to accept the challenge to play the Bears on Berkeley with a slot in the Varsity Cup National Championship final on the line.

"We've never played before on Witter Rugby Field and we're excited about that," said Pacheco. "We're going to have to clean up our tackle area, specifically, to have our best chance next weekend."

Also winning on Super Regional Saturday was Brigham Young, which advanced with a 70-15 victory over Dartmouth in Annapolis, Md., and will host an April 26 Varsity Cup National Championship semifinal against Navy, which bested Texas, 64-10.

Following BYU-Navy and Cal-CWU next Saturday, the semifinal winners advance to the final held May 3 at Rio Tinto Stadium in Salt Lake City and broadcast on NBC Sports Network. For tickets and other information, visit VarsityCup.us.

After the finale of their 15s season, the Bears will return to Philadelphia May 31-June 1 for the Collegiate Rugby Championship 7s, also to be broadcast by NBC Sports Network and NBC. For CRC tickets, please make all purchases via http://www.usasevenscrc.com/tickets/cal.
