MANILA - Alex Aronson, a former starting flyhalf and clutch kicker for the Golden Bears, has been busy with his teammates on the Philippines National Team as they administer aid to the region in the wake of Typhoon Haiyan.

“A bunch of the boys who were in Manila after our most recent tournament went down to volunteer,” Aronson said. “We have helped prepare food and water relief packages to send to the Visayas Islands, which were hit the hardest”

At California, Aronson sits tied for fifth in Cal 7s history with his 17 conversions. Among his memorable moments for the Bears was the game-winning kick against UBC on Treasure Island in 2012. Hailing from Concord, Calif., Aronson also played in two Collegiate Rugby Championship 7s with the Bears in 2011 and 2012.

Since joining the Volcanoes earlier this year, Aronson has made four full international appearances in 15s and has also featured on the 7s circuit, most recently as his team beat Malaysia in the 7th/8th-place match to end its run at the HSBC Asian Sevens Series in Singapore.

“Our hearts go out to those so tragically affected by this typhoon,” said Cal head coach Jack Clark. “It's heartwarming, and not surprising, that Alex and his teammates are pitching in to assist.”

Called Typhoon Yolanda in the Philippines, the storm that hit the region last week is now estimated to be the most deadly natural disaster in recorded history.
