BERKELEY – Yet another member of Cal women’s soccer’s 2014 graduating class has joined a professional team as standout forward Rachel Mercik inked a deal with FFC Turbine Potsdam, the club announced Monday.
“Rachel is a fantastic player who will do very well in Germany,” said California head coach Neil McGuire. “She has great soccer IQ, which she will need in the Bundesliga. We are very proud of her.”
Mercik is the fourth member of Cal’s 2014 class to sign with an international pro team, joining teammates Genessee Daughetee, Emily Kruger and Nina Pedersen.
The El Dorado Hills, Calif. product capped her senior season ranking second on the team for goals (6) and assists (4) in 2013. She finished her career with 37 points from 13 goals and 11 assists. Mercik was also recently called up to the U-23 training camp and spent the summer of 2013 playing with the Seattle Sounders Women.
“Rachel Mercik is a very flexible, two-footed player who can play both offensively and defensively,” said Turbines head coach Bernd Schröder.
Cal has had considerable success with players moving on to the pro level in recent years. Along with the four members of the 2014 class, alumnae Katrin Omarsdottir (Liverpool LFC), Betsy Hassett (Manchester City LFC) and Alex Morgan (Portland Thorns) are all active in their respective leagues.
