BERKELEY – California midfielder Alie Zimmer has been named the NorPac Freshman of the Week after her solid debut for the Golden Bear field hockey team this weekend, the conference announced Wednesday.

Zimmer had a collegiate debut to remember by scoring both goals in Cal’s season-opening win against Fairfield. Trailing 1-0, Zimmer tied the game in the 49th minute after scoring from a scrum in front of the net. With the game then going to overtime, the freshman showed her poise to sprint past her defender and juke the goalkeeper on a 1v1 to score her first career game-winner in what also goes down as her first multi-goal game.

She also becomes the first Golden Bear freshman to score a game-winning goal since Lara Kruggel scored three game winners as a freshman in the 2010 season – a nearly four-year stretch.

The Bears travel to Bloomington, Indiana, this weekend with games scheduled against Indiana and Ohio.
