SAN FRANCISCO – No. 21/13 California used four second-half goals to run away with a 5-0 victory over the Portland State Vikings Sunday afternoon on Negoesco Field at the University of San Francisco Tournament. The Bears improve to 4-0 with their second shutout of the season, which snapped Portland State’s 16-game unbeaten streak.
Taylor Comeau got the Bears on the board in the 24th minute after sending the ball rolling past the Portland State goalie, who was coming out of the net to try to defend. The Vikings held the Bears to a close 1-0 game for 60 minutes before back-to-back goals from Samantha Witteman and Grace Leer helped Cal jump out to a 3-0 lead in the second half. Equipped with an army of talented strikers, the Bears continued their assault with another two goals, first from Kelly Fitzgerald and then on a penalty kick from Hannah Koski. Cal’s five goals from five Bears was a season-high for the team, and the most goals by the Bear squad since Aug. 19, 2012 when the Bears beat San Jose State 5-2.
Sunday’s matchup also included a bit of Golden Bear history as Portland State head coach Laura Schott faced her alma mater. Schott was a standout player for the Bears and still holds the program record for goals scored in a season (23, 2000) and career (56, 1999-2002). Schott also holds the single-game record for most goals (4) and points (9) and once held an eight-game scoring streak.
“It was nice to compete against a Bear legend in Laura Schott,” said Cal head coach Neil McGuire. “She has her team playing very well. They are organized and committed and provided a tough test.”
Next up, Cal closes a three-game Bay Area road trip at St. Mary’s on Friday, Sept. 5 at 4 p.m.
HEAD COACH NEIL MCGUIRE’S TAKE
We were happy with today’s performance. We were not excited about the energy level of our team on Friday as a general rule. Today, the energy was very good. They were excited to play. They were motivated. As a result, we were able to move the ball very effectively. Again, the fact that everyone played is great for chemistry. They performed very well and now we prepare for St. Mary’s.
GOLDEN BEAR GOALS
24’ – Taylor Comeau (assisted by Samantha Witteman) – pass came from Witteman and as the goalie came out, Comeau kicked a slow roller that sneaked past her
Comeau says: It was a great flick on and I was running into the back space. Just beat the goalie to the ball and touched it by her.
Witteman says: The center back on Portland State mis-passed, so I had two defenders one-step so I cut inside. The next person one-step so I cut outside of her. She was to my left so I just slotted it to the left far post.
63’ – Grace Leer (assisted by Guro Bergsvand) –Bergsvand passed it from the middle of the field to Leer, who volleyed it over the keeper’s head and into the center of the net
Leer says: My goal started from G (Guro Bergsvand) who made an amazing ball over the back line. I was playing left forward and I made an inside diagonal run behind the defense. G sent the ball over the top and it was pretty much a footrace. I sprinted onto it as fast I could and saw the goalie coming out. I did a little chip over the goalkeeper, which was cool because I don’t do that often, and I saw it float right into the net. I was pretty happy about that.
73’ – Kelly Fitzgerald (assisted by Heather Walleigh) – Walleigh crossed it to Fitzgerald’s left foot, and Fitzgerald sent a ball through the diving goalie’s feet
Fitzgerald says: Heather got the ball down the line on the left side and made a nice cross to the penalty box area is. I was just there and slotted it past the goalie and through her legs.
Portland State head coach Laura Schott is a former Golden Bear. She graduated as Cal’s all-time scoring leader with 56 goals.
Cal closes a three-game Bay Area road trip at St. Mary’s on Friday, Sept. 5 at 4 p.m. before returning to Berkeley to host Cal Poly on Sunday, Sept. 7. Sunday’s game is set for 4 p.m. and will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks.
