BERKELEY – While Alicia Asturias, Serena Leong and Leilani Alferos are already known for their spectacular performances in the gym, the Golden Bear trio was recently recognized for standout performances in the classroom as well. All three gymnasts were named Scholastic All-Americans by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches (NACGC).
The women’s gymnastics program was also recognized overall for the team’s cumulative 3.13 grade point average, adding to the recognition the team earned in May from the NCAA for having a perfect multiyear Academic Progress Rate score of 1,000.
Individually, Asturias, a psychology major, posted a 4.0 for the 2013-14 calendar year and was one of 64 gymnasts around the country honored for her perfect average. The award marks the third consecutive year Asturias has earned Scholastic All-America designation. Bioengineering major Leong earned a 3.77 for her second consecutive honor, and business major Alferos finished just behind Leong with a 3.76.
All three gymnasts were also Pac-12 All-Academic selections in 2014, and Asturias was named Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women’s gymnastics as well as a Capital One Academic All-American.
Scholastic All-America awards are granted to gymnasts with a 3.50 GPA for either the preceding academic year or 3.50 cumulative GPA. The NACGC awarded Scholastic All-America honors to 517 gymnasts this year.
