KHANTY-MANSIYSK, Russia – Cal sophomore Roser Tarrago erupted for seven goals to lead Spain to a 34-3 rout of Singapore on the first day of Group Play at the FINA Women’s Water Polo World Cup on Tuesday.
Tarrago, an All-American Honorable Mention as a freshman, was the second-leading scorer at the European Championships last month, in which Spain won the Gold Medal. The Spaniards also won the Gold Medal at last summer’s FINA World Championships and took the Silver Medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Tarrago’s seven goals was the most by any player during the first day of the FINA World Cup.
Fellow Cal sophomores Dora Antal and Anna Illes, playing for their native Hungary, fell to Australia 10-7 on the first day of Group Play. Antal, the 2014 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Newcomer of the Year and a First Team All-American last season, scored a goal for the Hungarians. Illes was an All-American Honorable Mention in 2014.
Group Play continues Wednesday with Spain taking on China and Hungary doing battle against South Africa.
