John’s Creek, Ga. – Cal men’s golfers Walker Huddy and Ben Doyle saw their hopes to reach U.S. Amateur match play come to an end Tuesday at the Atlanta Athletic Club’s Highlands Course. Huddy (73-74 – 147, +4) finished two shots behind a group of 17 players that reached a playoff for the final four of 64 match-play spots. Doyle (73-81 – 154, +11) had been tied with Huddy in a tie for 70th place after Monday’s opening round but fell well off the pace after a 10-over par round Tuesday.

Huddy played even-par golf over the final 15 holes with just one bogey on the par-four ninth and a birdie on the par-five 18th but was never able to get above the cut line after starting the day with three consecutive bogeys on the par-four first, second and third holes.

Doyle also managed a single birdie on the par-four 11th, while he had three bogeys and four double bogeys.

Television coverage of the seven-day event begins Wednesday with two hours on the Golf Channel (4-6 p.m. ET/1-4 p.m. PT).
