John’s Creek, Ga. – Cal men’s golfer Ben Doyle and Walker Huddy both fired one-over par rounds of 72 over the first 18 holes of stroke play at the 2014 U.S. Amateur Championship that began Monday at the Atlanta Athletic Club’s Highlands Course. Doyle and Huddy are both among a group of 35 players tied for 70th place heading into Tuesday’s final second and final stroke-play round. The top 64 players at the end of stroke play and any ensuing playoffs advance to match play beginning Wednesday.

Doyle, who will join Cal as a true freshman in 2014-15, birdied his first hole on the par-four 10th. He would drop back to two-over par after bogeys on the 12th, 14th and fourth holes, all par fours. Doyle got back to even with birdies on the par-four fifth and par-three eighth before giving one stroke back with a bogey on the par-four ninth.

Huddy, a third-year sophomore at Cal in 2014-15, also started on the 10th hole and shot an even-par first nine with a bogey on the par-four 16th and a birdie on the par-five 18th. He would bogey three of four holes at one point over his closing holes on the par-five third, par-four fifth and par-three sixth but managed a birdie on the par-four fourth and came up with another on the par-three eighth to help mitigate the damage.

After morning tee times from the 10th hole Monday both Doyle and Huddy will tee off in the afternoon from the first hole Tuesday with Doyle starting at 1:15 p.m. ET/10:15 a.m. PT and Huddy at 1:35 p.m./10:35 a.m.

Television coverage of the seven-day event begins Wednesday with two hours on the Golf Channel (4-6 p.m. ET/1-4 p.m. PT).
