IRVINE, CALIF. –Cal’s Ryan Murphy finished second in the 200-meter back and Golden Bear Josh Prenot had an impressive third-place finish in the 200-meter breast as the two members of Cal’s NCAA champion men’s swimming and diving team shined during the second day of the Phillips 66 U.S. Nationals in Irvine.
Murphy had the top swim of the Cal contingent that included three of the top five finishers in the 200 back. Murphy was edged out by 2012 London Olympic gold medalist Tyler Clary 1:54.73 to 1:55.99. The Bears’ Jacob Pebley placed fourth with a time of 1:56.68, while incoming Cal freshman Connor Green was fifth with a time of 1:57.60.
Murphy was the 2014 Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year and was the NCAA champion in both the 100 and 200-yard back as a freshman.
Prenot swam a career-best 2:10.43 in the 200 breast to earn the bronze. Prenot was the 2013 Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year and is a two-time conference champion in the 400 IM.
Both Murphy and Prenot now join former Bear stars Nathan Adrian and Tom Shields as Cal men swimmers who have qualified for the Pan Pacific Championships, Aug. 21-24, in Gold Coast, Australia.
On Wednesday, Shields topped the field in the 200 fly with a time of 1:55.09 over Clary’s 1:56.00. Adrian, the 2012 Olympic gold medalist in the 100 free, won the U.S. National meet in that event with a mark of 48.31, topping Ryan Lochte’s 48.96.
