Tarrago, Spain Advance To Gold Medal Game

BUDAPEST, Hungary – Cal sophomore Roser Tarrago will play for a Gold Medal for the third straight year after Spain beat Hungary 9-8 on Thursday in the semifinals of the 2014 European Championships.

Fellow Cal sophomores Dora Antal and Anna Illes play for Hungary.

Tarrago won a Silver Medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics and then captured a Gold last summer when Spain won the FINA World Championships. Spain will play The Netherlands for the Gold Medal on Saturday.

Tarrago didn’t score Thursday, but ranks second at the European Championships with 14 goals and is tied for first with 11 steals. Antal has five goals and seven steals. Antal and Illes also were held off the scoreboard during Thursday’s game.

Hungary will meet Italy in the Bronze Medal Game on Saturday.

Antal was a First Team All-American last season for the Bears and the 2014 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Newcomer of the Year. Tarrago and Illes each earned All-American honorable mention.
