SURREY, British Columbia, Canada – Golden Bear softball alumnae Jolene Henderson (2010-13) and Valerie Arioto (2008-12) continued a successful summer with the USA Softball Women’s National Team by claiming silver at the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada. The squad fell to Japan 7-0 in five innings in Monday’s championship game after playing 12 games over the course of a week.

The Red, White and Blue finished the tournament with a 9-3 record, suffering losses in the championship final to Japan and in the playoff opener to Canada, as well as a pool-play loss to Japan. The squad’s dominating performance included 79 runs scored, with 12 coming from Arioto.

Arioto appeared in all 12 games for the Eagles, including one inning of work in the circle against Basque Country (Spain). She went 9-for-19 (.474) in 11 appearances at the plate, once again leading the Eagles in home runs with five for the tournament as well as a team-leading 14 RBIs.

Henderson put up a 2-2 record in four starts, including a shutout of the White Rock Renegades. Cal’s former standout ace tossed 15 innings in five appearances, allowing nine earned runs, 18 hits and six walks while dealing 13 strikeouts.

Next, the U.S. Women will play an exhibition game on July 29 before departing for training in Europe ahead of the International Softball Federation (ISF) Women’s World Championships. The squad will train in Azzano, Italy for a week before the championships begin in Haarlem, Netherlands on Aug. 15.
