BUDAPEST, Hungary – Cal sophomore Roser Tarrago scored six goals on six shots to lead Spain to an 18-4 victory over France during group play at the European Women’s Water Polo Championships on Friday.
Tarrago, who earned All-American honorable mention honors last season as a freshman, leads the tournament with nine goals and is second in steals with seven.
Fellow Cal sophomore Dora Antal netted three goals in three attempts as host Hungary got by Greece 12-7. Antal, who was the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Newcomer of the Year in 2014 and a First Team All-American, has four goals for the tournament and five steals. Cal teammate and sophomore Anna Illes led Hungary’s defensive effort, contributing a steal and a block.
“I’m very happy with the girls’ performance,” Cal coach Richard Corso said. “It’s important not only for them to do well at Cal, but to go back and represent their national team is even more important. I want them to perform at the highest level.”
Group play continues Sunday with Spain taking on Italy and Hungary playing Great Britain.
