Patterson Grabs World Championships Spot for South Africa

Bears junior was second in the all-around, and won floor and high bar titles

KLERKSDORP, South Africa – California Golden Bear junior Ryan Patterson finished second in the all-around competition at the South African High Performance Artistic Gymnastics National Championships in Klerksdorp on Friday with a total score of 81.150. His second place finish saw him through to five of the six individual apparatus finals, as well as booked his spot on the South African national team for the 2014 World Championships in Nanning, China in October. Patterson also won the individual events for floor exercise and high bar, while finishing tied for second on the still rings in the finals on Saturday.

Patterson had a hit routine to capture the title in the floor exercise with a score of 14.550, besting Siphamandla Ngcobo, who posted a 14.200. The junior from Pacifica, Calif. added an event title when he scored a 14.350 on the high bar, surpassing club teammate Cameron Mckenzie, who earned a 14.100 from the judges. He added to his solid Saturday performance on the still rings, tying for second with a score of 14.000 with Ngcobo.
