BERKELEY – Cal’s men’s swimming and diving freshman standout Ryan Murphy not only shined in the pool this past season, he also shined in the classroom as Murphy has been named a Scholar All-American by the College Swimming Coaches Association of American.

Owning a 3.7 cumulative GPA after his first year as a Golden Bear, Murphy capped his freshman season with two NCAA individual titles en route to Cal winning its second consecutive NCAA Championship. The newcomer took home the 100 and 200 backstroke titles while also swimming a leg of the champion 200 free relay, 400 medley relay and 200 medley relay teams.

A native of Ponte Verde, Fla., Murphy was named the Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year as the Bears captured the Pac-12 title for the second year in the row. He won the 100 and 200 backstroke at the conference championships as well.

The Scholar All-America award is presented to college and university swimmers and divers who have achieved a cumulative, or term grade point average of 3.5 or higher for the academic term coinciding with their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA/CCCAA Swimming and Diving Championships and have qualified for and competed at the Championship.

Joining Murphy as Cal’s CSCAA academic honorees were honorable mention selections Sven Campbell, Henry Chung, Scott Farley and diver Grayson Huston.
