Henley-on-Thames, England – California men’s crew is coming back to the United States victorious at the Henley Royal Regatta in England.
One of the Golden Bears’ two 8+ entries in the Henley Royal Regatta captured the title in the Ladies Challenge Plate on Sunday. They won by three feet over Leander Club with a time of 6.19 in the 550-yard (2,112-meter) course on the River Thames in England.
Racing in a head-to-head knock out competition format, the Bears defeated California Rowing Club and New York Athletic Club in Friday’s quarterfinal round with a time of 7.10, then beat Leander Club and Molesey Boat Club by a half length in Saturday’s semifinals with a time of 6.15 to reach Sunday’s final.
The victorious Cal crew includes coxswain Julian Venonsky, Steven Tuck (8), Christian Reynolds (7), Jordan Vanderstoep (6), James Scott (5), Richard Walter (4), Lucas O'Brien (3), Patrick McGlone (2), and Cole Reiser (1).
This is the second crown at the Henley Royal Regatta for Reynolds, Scott, McGlone and Resier, who also won the Temple Cup in 2011.
The Bears’ other 8+ boat in the Henley Royal Regatta featuring coxswain Erin Alexander, Michael Bernerius (8), Kyle Flagg (7), Jason Stroud (6), Christian Kader (5), Peter Stone (4), Atli Thorkelsson (3), Patrick Winnett (2), and Sean Murphy (1) was one of 74 entries competing for the Temple Challenge Cup.
The boat was defeated in its first race by eventual semifinalists Amsterdamsche Studenten Roeivereeniging Nereus, NED, which won by three-quarters of a length won with a time of 6.36.
Several Bears will now turn their attention to the World Rowing Championships in August.
