MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Former California men’s basketball and All-Pac-12 Conference standout guard Justin Cobbs will play with the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA Orlando Pro Summer League, the organization announced on Tuesday.
A three-time All-Pac-12 selection, Cobbs was a first-team all-conference pick as a senior in 2014. The 6-3 guard was voted a finalist for the 2014 Bob Cousy Award, recognizing the nation’s top point guard. Cobbs was also a National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) First Team All-District selection as a senior with the Golden Bears. He ranked 24th nationally, averaging 5.8 assists per game last season. The guard finished his career with at least five assists in 60 out of his 102 games at Cal. Cobbs, who played the 2009-10 season at Minnesota, transferred to Cal for his sophomore year and has painted his name throughout the school’s career record books. He finished second with 531 career assists, 11th with 1,469 career points, third with a 5.2 apg. career assist average and seventh with a .817 career free throw percentage.
Cobbs ranked ninth in the Pac-12 in scoring as a senior last season with a team-best 15.6 ppg. average. He also ranked second in the league in assists (5.8 apg.) and third in assist-to-turnover ratio. Cobbs’ 204 assists during the 2013-14 season ranked fourth on Cal’s single-season assists chart.
A four-time Pac-12 Player of the Week selection, Cobbs earned his final conference weekly honor in early February after capping a 19-point, seven-assist performance with a last-second game-winning shot to lift Cal to a 60-58 victory over top-ranked and previously unbeaten Arizona.
Cobbs is the seventh former Golden Bear currently with an NBA team, joining Ryan Anderson (New Orleans Pelicans), Allen Crabbe (Portland Trail Blazers), Jorge Gutierrez (Brooklyn Nets), Jason Kidd (head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks), Sean Marks (assistant coach of the San Antonio Spurs), and Shareef Abdur-Rahim (Director of Player Personnel of the Sacramento Kings).
Memphis is one of 10 teams competing in the 2014 Orlando Pro Summer League with games beginning Saturday, July 5 on the practice court of the Orlando Magic at the Amway Center.
The Grizzlies’ summer league schedule includes games against Miami (July 5), Detroit (July 6), Orlando (July 8) and Houston (July 10) before competing in the designated championship day on July 11.
Memphis assistant coach Shawn Respert will serve as the Grizzlies’ head coach for the first three games, while coach/advance scout Jason March will run the squad for the final two games of the summer league.
NBA TV will televise the Orlando Pro Summer League games with a complete schedule of games, while fans once again will be able to watch every game live on NBA.com and on the NBA Game Time app.
