WALTON-ON-THE-HILL, England – Team USA and Team Europe will head into Saturday’s final day of action at the 2014 Palmer Cup tied at 10-10, marking the first time since 2005 that the teams were tied heading into the final round. The Ryder-Cup style amateur event being played this year at the Walton Heath Golf Club pits 10 American amateurs including former Cal player Brandon Hagy and coached by Steve Desimone against 10 amateurs from Europe.

“I don’t think we could ask for a better setting tomorrow,” Desimone said. “We have two tremendous teams with great players up and down the lineup playing at one of the finest golf courses in the world and a match that is all square.”

Each time a match is won in the Palmer Cup the winning team receives a single point or a half point if the match is split with the Palmer Cup champion the team with the most points at the conclusion of three days of play. If the team total is tied at the completion of three days of competition the previous years’ winner will retain the cup, which was Team USA in 2013.

Hagy will play his final amateur event in the first of 10 singles matches Saturday, taking on James Ross of Europe at 9 a.m. local time (1 a.m. PT). The remaining single matches will follow with start times in 10-minute increments.

“I’m pretty excited to play tomorrow,” Hagy said. “I’m just going to take it all in and enjoy the walk. I have had some great memories in amateur golf and I can’t think of a better way to finish it off than with a Palmer Cup win.”

“There is great anticipation for tomorrow here at Walton Heath and I suspect there will be some sizeable galleries to watch the conclusion of the Palmer Cup,” Desimone added. “I’m not sure we can do it much better than this and I’m so glad to be a part of it.”

Europe’s Ricardo Gouveia came from behind for a 1-up victory over Hagy in singles action Friday. Hagy led 3-up after 10 holes, erasing a one-hole deficit after four holes by capturing the fifth, seventh, ninth and 10th holes. But Gouveia won the 11th hole to cut Hagy’s lead to two before taking each of the final three holes for the victory.

“It was a phenomenal day today,” Desimone said after third round action. “There was drama down the stretch today one match right after another. It was tremendous golf out of both teams.”

Hagy and playing partner Ollie Schniederjans of Georgia Tech split a pair of matches in the opening day of action Friday, winning 2 and 1 in in a foursome match against Paul Dunne and Grant Forrest before falling 3 and 2 to Thomas Detry and Jon Rahm in a four-ball match (best ball play).

Hagy is the fifth Cal player to participate in the Palmer Cup, joining former Cal golfers Michael Kim, Joël Stalter and Michael Weaver in 2013, and Peter Tomasulo in 2003. All but Stalter were on winning Team USA squads that have helped stake the Americans to a 9-7-1 advantage in the first 17 editions of the event that began in 1997.

Desimone is the first member of the Cal coaching staff to serve as a head coach in the Palmer Cup and the second to have coached in the event. Current associate head coach Walter Chun was an assistant coach for Team USA in 2009.
