BERKELEY – The California men’s soccer team will return to the pitch for 17 games during the 2014 regular season, with 10 of those matches appearing on the Pac-12 Networks and 10 of those games taking place at home on Goldman Field at Edwards Stadium. Six of the Golden Bears’ home fixtures will air on the Pac-12 Networks, up from five in 2013.
The games slated to air on the Pac-12 Networks are; vs. Gonzaga on Sunday, Sept. 14, vs. Delaware on Friday, Sept. 19, at Washington on Thursday, Oct. 6, at Oregon State on Sunday, Oct. 5, vs. UCLA on Friday, Oct. 10, at Stanford on Monday, Oct. 20, at UCLA on Sunday, Nov. 2, vs. Oregon State on Friday, Nov. 7, vs. Washington on Sunday, Nov. 9 and vs. Stanford on Sunday, Nov. 16.
The Pac-12 Networks also broadcasted nine regular season Cal games in 2013, when the Bears compiled a 14-5-2 overall record (6-3-1 in the Pac-12), as well as their third round NCAA Tournament win over Coastal Carolina. The Bears are coming off of a record-setting season that saw them ranked number one in the country for a six-week period for the first time in school history. They advanced to the school’s third ever quarterfinal appearance and earned the NCAA tournament’s fourth overall seed, the highest ever for the program.
Cal’s 2014 schedule includes eight games against five teams that competed in the 2013 NCAA Tournament. Four of those teams reached the third round or better, including conference foe Washington, who like the Bears were eliminated in the quarterfinals. Washington was eliminated by the New Mexico Lobos, one step away from reaching the College Cup.
Head coach Kevin Grimes’ squad opens their 2014 season on with a cross country trip where they battle the North Carolina Tar Heels on Friday, Aug. 29 in Chapel Hill and then head to Winston-Salem to square off against the Wake Forest Demon Deacons on Sunday, Aug. 31.
California returns home for a five-game homestand to close out their non-conference slate and begins Pac-12 play on the road with a pair of Pacific Northwest opponents, as they take on the Washington Huskies on Oct. 2 in Seattle, followed by a visit to Corvallis on Oct. 5 against the Oregon State Beavers.
Cal hosts their conference home opener on Oct. 10 when they battle UCLA, followed by a match against the San Diego State Aztecs on Oct. 12. The defending Pac-12 champion, UCLA reached the NCAA’s third round last season before losing in an upset on penalties to the University of Connecticut.
The Bears will travel across the bay for the first leg of the Bay Area Derby on Oct. 20. Following a trip to Los Angeles to take on the UCLA Bruins, Cal closes out their regular season and conference schedule with a three game homestand. The Bears wrap up their slate with matches against Oregon State (Nov. 7), Washington (Nov. 9) and the final leg of the Bay Area Derby against Stanford on Nov. 16.
