KUNSHAN, China – Incoming Cal freshman Emma Wright scored a goal to help Canada defeat Russia 14-12 on Thursday on the final day of group play at the FINA Women’s Water Polo World League Super Final.

Wright’s goal was part of an offensive flurry for the Canadians, who scored five goals in the final period to erase a 10-9 deficit. It was the third goal of the tournament for Wright, who will join Cal’s program after her obligations with the Canadian National Team are completed.

Meanwhile, Cal sophomore Roser Tarrago scored her first goal of the tournament for her native Spain, but it wasn’t enough as her country was defeated 8-5 by the United States. Spain led 5-4 at halftime but was shut out in the second half.

Bracket play begins Friday, with Canada taking on Australia and Spain meeting China. Spain won the World Championships last summer and took the Silver Medal at the 2012 Olympics. Tarrago played on both of those teams.
