Five Bears Earn Final ITA Rankings

McLachlan, Johnson, Bayane, Melton & Goransson are Ranked in Singles and/or Doubles

BERKELEY – Reflective of another strong collegiate tennis season for the California men’s tennis team, five Golden Bears earned rankings in the final ITA singles and doubles polls of the year. Seniors Ben McLachlan and Campbell Johnson claimed rankings in singles, while the team of juniors Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton and the pair of McLachlan and freshman Andre Goransson garnered doubles rankings.

All five Bears were key participants in the Cal team’s run to the NCAA Championship round of 16, and three of them added deep runs to the NCAA individual championships as well.

McLachlan, Cal’s No. 1 singles player who ended his final season as a Bear with an 11-11 singles record, is ranked 42nd in the singles poll. A member of the All-Pac-12 first team, McLachlan also claimed All-America honors for reaching the NCAA Singles Championship quarterfinals. Johnson, Cal’s No. 2 singles player, ends the year ranked 76th. He finished his final season with a 20-11 record and All-Pac-12 honorable mention.

In doubles, the pair of Bayane and Melton ended the season with a No. 19 ranking, after reaching the NCAA doubles quarterfinals and winding up with a 20-8 record. Melton and Bayane also earned All-America honors for advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals. The duo of Goransson and McLachlan ended with a 10-7 record and No. 71 ITA ranking. Goransson was another All-Pac-12 honorable mention this season.
