BERKELEY – California head men’s basketball coach Cuonzo Martin announced the signing of standout point guard Brandon Chauca to a National Letter of Intent.

“We are excited for the opportunity to have Brandon join the Cal Family,” Martin said. “He has the ability to distribute and score the basketball. In high school, he displayed excellent range with his shot. Brandon also has the foot speed to be a good on-ball defender.”

Chauca, who starred this past season at 22 Feet Academy of the Shannon Forest Christian School in Greenville, S.C., averaged 23.1 points, 7.4 assists. 3.1 rebounds and 3.7 steals per game as a senior. Regarded as an exceptional shooter, the 5-9 guard owned a shooting percentage of better than 60 percent overall from the field, including 49 percent from three-point range during the 2013-14 season.

He posted a pair of 40-point games this past season, while recording nearly 10 double-doubles as a senior. The guard had 40 points on 6-of-11 shooting from three-point range in a victory over Moravian Prep during the year.

Originally from Alexandria, Va., Chauca joined 22 Feet Academy last season. He played his freshman year at Stonewall Jackson High School in Manassas, Va. where he was an all-district selection in his first scholastic season. Chauca also played one season at St. Benedict’s Prep in Newark, N.J., and at Christian Faith Center Academy in Creedmoor, N.C., before enrolling at 22 Feet Academy.

Chauca joins Westwind Prep center Kingsley Okoroh and guard Stephen Domingo, who transferred to Cal from Georgetown, as part of the Golden Bears’ 2014 incoming class.
