Bears earn top-three finishes in each semifinal race on Saturday

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – California women’s crew will have an opportunity to defend its NCAA Championship in the varsity eight and race for titles in the second varsity and varsity four on Sunday as each boat advanced to its respective Grand Final during Saturday’s competition at the NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, Ind.

The Golden Bears placed first in the varsity four, second in the varsity eight and third in the second varsity eight during Saturday’s semifinal races to earn a spot in Sunday’s Grand Final.

Cal pulled out to an early advantage in the varsity eight with the Bears leading Ohio State. The Buckeyes pulled even with the Bears over the final 500 meters, edging Cal by less than two seconds (6:28.579 – 6:30.151) in the semifinal heat. They will square off again in Sunday’s Grand Final.

In a tightly-contested second varsity semifinal race between Cal, Stanford and Virginia, UVA (6:43.702) edged out the Bears (6:45.404) and the Cardinal (6:44.395) with the three boats separated by less than two seconds. Cal was in third place for most of the race, beating Michigan to finish third and earn a spot into Sunday’s Grand Final.

Cal and Washington were ahead of the rest of the boats for most of the varsity four with the Huskies holding a slight lead at the midpoint of the race. The Bears pulled even heading into the final 500 meters and continued to push their advantage, taking the race by a length over UW (7:35.330 – 7:38.059).

The varsity four Grand Final will take place at 7:10 a.m. (PT) on Sunday, with the second varsity eight Grand Final at 7:30 a.m. (PT) and the varsity eight Grand Final at 7:50 a.m. (PT). You can watch Sunday's action live by clicking here.
