WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – California men’s crew enjoyed a successful first day at the Intercollegiate Racing Championships Friday at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. with all five boats advancing. The varsity eight, second varsity eight, third varsity eight and freshman eight each won its heat race, while the varsity four placed second in its heat on the opening day of competition.
“It was a good first day with everybody advancing,” California head men’s crew coach Mike Teti said. “We are going to have to be better tomorrow. It won’t be easy, but the guys are working hard.”
The varsity eight, second varsity eight and third varsity eight will next race in Saturday’s A Final, while the varsity four will compete in Saturday’s B Final and the freshman eight will next race in Sunday’s Grand Final.
Cal’s varsity eight captured a three-second victory in its heat Friday morning, racing down the 2,000-meter course in 5:40.679. Boston placed second with a time of 5:43.945, while Wisconsin was third with a time of 5:49.261.
The Golden Bears’ second varsity captured a six-second victory in its heat with a time of 5:45.691, ahead of second—place Boston (5:49.729).
In the third varsity eight, the Bears won by six seconds over second-place Northeastern (5:50.003 – 5:56.533).
Cal’s freshman eight posted a nearly eight-second win in its heat, recording a time of 5:47.597 over second-place Wisconsin (5:49.170).
The Bears’ varsity four placed second in its heat with a time of 6:23.511, just three seconds back of Washington (6:20.956).
Racing continues at Mercer Lake on Saturday morning, beginning with the varsity four semifinal at 6:15 a.m. (PT). The third varsity race is slated for 7 a.m. (PT), followed by the second varsity semifinal at 7:30 a.m. (PT) and the varsity eight semifinal at 8:15 a.m. (PT).
