WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Cal’s trio of sophomore returners led the way for the Golden Bears in the classroom this year, earning Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention merits for the 2013-14 academic year. Vanessa Alvarez, Jasmin Mejia and Nisa Ontiveros join junior Danielle Henderson on the list, league commissioner Larry Scott announced Friday.
To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must be of sophomore standing or higher with a minimum 3.0 overall grade point average and be a significant contributor.
Henderson, a sociology major, picks up her second consecutive honorable mention laurel to add to NFCA All-Pacific Second Team and All-Pac-12 First Team honors in 2014. Mejia and Ontiveros are also sociology majors, while Alvarez is a legal studies major.
Cal’s four All-Academic selections ties for second-most in program history. The Golden Bears placed five on conference all-academic teams in 1998 and 2003, and aside from this year also had four all-academic selections in 1991, 1992, 1999 and 2012.
