Cal Ends Season at No. 16 in Final ITA Poll
BERKELEY – In the final ITA team rankings of the 2013-14 season, California finished at No. 16. The Golden Bears earned other end of the year accolades, as Ben McLachlan and doubles partners Gregory Bayane and Chase Melton claimed All-America honors during their respective runs in the recent NCAA championships.
The ITA’s end of the year singles and doubles rankings will come out on June 4.
As a team, the Bears reached the round of 16 in the NCAA Championship, ending the season with a 4-1 loss to ninth-seeded and ninth-ranked Texas. Cal ended the year with a 17-8 overall record, including a 4-3 record and fourth-place finish in the Pac-12 Conference. Other highlights of the season included Cal winning the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at Pepperdine to qualify for the ITA National Men's Team Indoor Championships, reaching the quarterfinals of those indoor championships and upsetting No. 10 Texas A&M, 4-3, in the NCAA round of 32 in College Station, Texas.
McLachlan, a senior ranked 55th in the most recent ITA poll, reached the quarterfinals in the NCAA singles tournament, falling to eventual champion Marcos Giron of UCLA. The second-seeded and second-ranked player, Giron topped McLachlan, 6-1, 6-3. McLachlan – who ended the year with an 11-11 record and completed a fine Cal career in that match – garnered All-America honors for getting into the NCAA singles round of 16.
Bayane and Melton, both juniors, earned their All-America honors for reaching the NCAA doubles quarterfinals. The 28th-ranked Cal duo (20-8 record) likewise lost to the second-seeded and second-ranked eventual NCAA champs, falling to Tennessee’s Mikelis Libietis and Hunter Reese, 7-5, 6-3.
