SAN FRANCISCO – Cal baseball scored four runs in the first inning and went on to cruise to a 12-4 win at San Francisco Monday at Benedetti Diamond. With the win, the Golden Bears improved to 24-26 overall, while USF ended its 2014 season 25-29. Cal will next conclude Pac-12 play May 22-24 at Oregon in a three-game conference series at PK Park in Eugene.
The Bears finished with 19 hits on the day, with senior first baseman Devon Rodriguez going 4-for-5 with a two-run homer in the sixth inning. The winning pitcher for the Bears was freshman right-hander Alex Schick (2-1), who went 4.0 innings with one hit, two runs, three walks and three strikeouts.
The Dons got their runs on a two-run homer by Brendan Hendriks in the first inning, a solo home run by Hendriks in the sixth inning and a fielder’s choice RBI by Hendriks in the ninth inning.
The big hits for the Bears for the Bears in the first inning were an RBI double by junior designated hitter Brenden Farney and a three-run double by senior left fielder Vince Bruno off of USF starter Sheldon Lee.
Cal added a run in the second inning on a fielder’s choice RBI by senior catcher Mike Reuvekamp, and later tallied three runs in the sixth inning on an RBI single by freshman center fielder Aaron Knapp and a two-run homer to right field by Rodriguez. It was Rodriguez’s team-leading seventh home run and 34th RBI.
The Bears scored twice more in the seventh on sophomore right fielder Devin Pearson’s two-run double down the left field line. Cal got its last two runs on a solo home run by junior shortstop Derek Campbell down the left field line in the – his seventh homer of the year – and an RBI single by Ruevekamp.
