BERKELEY - Cal yielded five runs to Arizona (20-30, 9-19) in the fifth inning to let a tight game slip away, falling to the Wildcats, 6-0, Friday in the first game of a three-game Pac-12 series at Evans Diamond.

The Golden Bears (21-26, 9-16) had trailed 1-0 after freshman right-hander Daulton Jefferies (6.0 innings, seven hits, six runs, two earned runs, four walks, four strikeouts) gave up an unearned run in the third inning after Arizona's Kevin Newman's single to left-center field was bobbled by Cal center fielder Aaron Knapp, allowing Zach Gibbons to score.

From there, Wildcat right-hander James Farris (5-6) shutdown the Bears, throwing a complete game with four hits, two walks and seven strikeouts.

The game unraveled for Cal in the fifth when Tyler Krause had a two-out, two-run single to center field and a throwing error by Bear shortstop Derek Campbell allowed three runs to score.

Campbell had one of Cal's four hits on the day - with junior designated hitter Brenden Farney, senior left fielder Vince Bruno and sophomore right fielder Devin Pearson also collecting hits off of Farris.

The Bears will host Arizona in the second game of the three-game series Saturday, May 17 at 4 p.m. at Evans Diamond. The game is also shown on the Pac-12 Networks Bay Area.
