BERKELEY – California freshman Filip Bergevi claimed the ITA Northwest Region Rookie Player of the Year Award, the ITA announced this week. The Golden Bear is currently in Athens, Georgia, where 17th-ranked Cal will play ninth-seeded/ranked Texas on Friday at 6 a.m. PT/9 a.m. ET.

A product of Ahus, Sweden, Bergevi has compiled a 20-13 singles record, including a 13-7 dual-match mark mostly playing at No. 3 singles, at which he has an 11-7 record. He also has a 15-11 doubles record, including a 10-4 mark playing with sophomore Mads Engsted at No. 3 doubles.

In Cal’s most recent match – in the NCAA Championship second round – the team of Bergevi and Engsted won in doubles, 8-7(2), over Texas A&M’s 89th-ranked team of Jeremy Efferding/Jordan Szabo, to help the Bears capture the doubles point and eventually upset the eighth-seeded/10th-ranked Aggies on May 11 in College Station, Texas.

Bergevi had a strong start in the fall. At the USTA/ITA Northwest Regional Championships in October, he won four matches before falling in the quarterfinals to senior teammate Campbell Johnson.
