Bears Travel to Pullman for Pac-12 Championships

The Golden Bears head to Mooberry T&F Complex on Saturday and Sunday
By Cal Athletics on Thu, May 15, 2014

BERKELEY –The California Golden Bears Track & Field team will be competing this weekend at the Pac-12 Championships on Saturday, May 17 and Sunday, May 18 at Mooberry Track & Field Complex in Pullman, Wash. Senior Jaci Powell got the team competition started off on the right foot, as she earned four points in last weekend’s heptathlon, where she placed fifth. The action begins on Saturday at noon PT with the men’s hammer and women’s long jump. The Pac-12 Championships will be broadcast on delay, and will air on Sunday May 25 at 9 a.m. PT on Pac-12 Networks.

The Cal men’s team looks to build off of their Mountain Pacific Sports Federation indoor season conference title from earlier this year, and improve on their 2013 finish at the Pac-12’s in Los Angeles, where they were 8th. On the women’s side, the Golden Bears are aiming to improve on their 9th place finish last season.

From an individual standpoint, redshirt senior Hammed Suleman will be defending his long jump title from a year ago, when he leapt a distance of 25-11.50, becoming the first Golden Bear to win the event in 17 years. He is the only Golden Bear returning to defend an individual conference title, as the second from 2013 belonged to former Bear Ray Stewart, who captured the title with a lifetime-best time of 13.41.

Redshirt senior Tom Blocker is one to watch in the 100-meters, as his legal PR of 10.41 and wind-aided mark of 10.34 (which ranks fourth in the conference) sets him up for a good opportunity to show well. Blocker is also set to compete in the 200-meters, 4x100-meter relay and possibly the 4x400-meter relay. Senior hurdler Milan Ristic looks to make his return to the track after missing some time in his first Pac-12 Championship competition. He is set to compete in the 110-meter hurdles, where his legal PR of 13.71 ranks second amongst the field, as does his wind-aided time of 13.59, set at the Texas Relays earlier this season. Sophomore Randy Bermea ran the fastest time of any in the field in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking a 50.86 and is looking for his first conference championship. In the field events, redshirt senior Derek White figures to have a good opportunity to show well in both the hammer (ranks fourth in the conference) and discus (ranks third).

Junior Kelsey Santisteban’s 5000-meter time (15:52.94) ranks fourth in the conference and her 10000-meter time (33:31.85) time that put her third on Cal’s All-Time Performers List and ranks sixth in the Pac-12 sets her up for a quality opportunity to capture some important points for the team competition. Redshirt senior Malaina Payton is also seeking her first Pac-12 long jump title, and ranks third in the field coming into the competition. Sophomore Shelby Ashe is also looking for a solid performance in the hammer, entering the field with the fourth best mark all season (200-11).
