BERKELEY – No. 2 California men’s crew heads to Lake Natoma this Sunday to compete in the Pac-12 Championships at Gold River.

The Bears, ranked No. 2 nationally in the latest USRowing Collegiate Poll released on Wednesday, are part of a highly-competitive field that includes four crews ranked in the top-20. Cal will clash with top-ranked Washington, No. 12 Stanford, No. 14 Oregon State, Colorado and Washington State in the conference championships.

“Everyone’s very excited to race this weekend,” head coach Mike Teti said. “We’ve had a pretty hard week with exams and some of the guys are graduation on Saturday, so it’s been busy, but they’ve been holding up well. It’s what you train all year for, these championships, so we’re really looking forward to it.”

Cal has captured the team title in the Pac-12 Championships 15 times, with the most recent coming in 2009. The varsity eight boat won its first conference crow in 1899 and has won a total of 27 times, including six since 2000.

The Bears look to upend the top-ranked Huskies, who have claimed the conference championship in seven of the last eight years, winning the past four straight.

Last season, Cal finished second overall in the Pac-12 Championships, thanks to a gold-medal finish in the varsity four. The Bears placed second behind Washington in the freshman eight, second varsity eight and varsity eight races.

Cal kicked off the 2014 spring campaign with a varsity eight victory at the San Diego Crew Classic to claim their fifth Copley Cup in the past six years. The first eight followed its performance in the opener by leading a sweep of No. 12 Wisconsin at the Stanford Invitational on April 18 and paced the Bears to a sweep of then-No. 16 Oregon State on April 19. Washington captured the Scoch Cup in the 103rd annual meeting between the two rowing powerhouses on April 26. The Bears capped the regular season by avenging a loss against Stanford in last year’s Big Row, emphasizing the victory by completing the sweep of the Cardinal.

You can follow the Bears for live race updates throughout the day on Sunday at the Pac-12 Championships and all year long on their official Twitter handle @CaliforniaCrew.

The Pac-12 Rowing Championships will be televised tape delay on Pac-12 Networks. The show is scheduled to air on Saturday, May 24 at 9:30 a.m. (PT).

To get to Lake Natoma, fans can use the address 1901 Hazel Ave., Gold River, CA 95670. The Sacramento State Aquatic Center is located near the main viewing area.

Admission is $5 per person at the Pac-12 Championships. Cash only will be accepted.
